a mighty hunter strikes again!
I started this post over a week ago and never got back to it! Sheesh! I am such a slacker!!
Anyway, 2 Mondays ago I decided to have my first fire of the season. It was a dreary, windy night, seemed perfect. As I was arranging the logs in the fireplace I heard what I thought was wind up in the chimney, paused for a minute wondering if it was too windy for the fire, but then decided it was fine.
So I lit the fire. Seconds later, a fast, black blur came flying out of the chimney, and through into the kitchen and up into the window under the curtains.
I yelped, and kept repeating to myself "please don't be a bat, please don't be a bat".
I opened the kitchen-to-porch door hoping it would fly to the porch, and then I could open the porch-to-outside door and problem would be solved. It didn't fly out immediately so I came into the other room to a)give it some privacy so it would not be afraid to fly outside and b)hide and c)update my facebook status.
A few moments later I heard the muffled meow of a mighty hunter. You know that sound? The one that sounds like they have a mouthful of recent kill? Yeah that.
Next thing I see- Ringo Stu walking in with a mouthful of black. I continued my chant "please don't be a bat, please don't be a bat" and slowly peeked at what he proudly dropped at my feet.
THANK GOD IT WASN'T A BAT!
Sadly, though, it was a Chimney Swift, which is, in fact, an endangered species.
So I was afraid Ringo might be wanted by the feds till someone pointed out that he was just protecting us from a home invasion.
So we're safe, we've had one more fire since then with no other unwanted visitors, and all is well.
(Well, unless you're that poor Chimney Swift)
